Choosing a practitioner

Varicose vein surgery is developing very quickly. It is thus fundamental to choose a highly specialized surgeon, fully up-to-date with the latest varicose vein surgery.

Some advice on making the right choice of varicose vein doctor.

The latest Mediterranean Congress of Angiology & Vascular Surgery, held in April 2008 in Nice wished to set out a number of rules in the choice of a practitioner: “The practitioner must be able to offer his patient all varicose vein treatments from medical treatment to endovenous laser treatment and varicose vein surgery and have personal experience of all of them.”

The doctor must be a vascular surgeon specializing in varicose vein surgery.

He must be able to perform ambulatory surgery without hospitalization using the technique of purely local tumescent anesthesia.

He must also be able to produce pre-operative marking mapping and monitoring of the surgery performed using Doppler-ultrasound scanning.

If a decision is made to perform varicose vein surgery, after consultation between the patient, the angiologist and their team, the doctor must be able to explain the decision and above all be able to practice soft surgery that conserves and respects healthy veins (that may be useful elsewhere).

Lastly, he must recommend regular monitoring by additional sclerotherapy to his patient (which will be performed by the patient’s angiologist).

Ensure that the surgeon who you consult clearly offers you all these essential precautions
